Kick Your Patient's Caffeine Habits!

"Nobody talk to me until I've had my cup of coffee can't function without my Diet Coke

Do you hear this from clients?  Where they need desperately that cuppa joe to start their morning?  And as the day wears on they can't function without more coffee or a few sodas just to stay awake and focused at their desk?  We hear stories like this every day.

While we practice not demonizing choices there really is a dilemma with caffeine.  Caffeine works as a psychoactive drug crossing the blood brain barrier and stimulating our central nervous system.  Yet it's legal unregulated and widely (or wildly?) popular with adults (and unfortunately children and teens too).  Clients often chuckle in recognition when we describe caffeine as that bad boyfriend who lifts us up rocks our world and then leaves us cold before returning to start the process all over again.  We may feel great energized and vibrant when we're with him but over time we're exhausted drained and a little burned out.  We need more and more to function but the relationship is less and less rewarding.  And with all this boyfriend drama we're too strung out to even look around for the nice guy out there who might be the perfect match for us.

So who are these natural energynice guy and how can we hook up our clients?

Our favorite love match is carnitine.  When clients add even a little carnitine to their diet and supplement regimen they notice a difference!  Carnitine occurs naturally in foods mostly animal protein and especially in darker meats like mutton lamb and beef.  It works its magic by helping the energy furnaces in our cells - our mitochondria - run efficiently and smoothly.  Robert Crayhon described carnitine as both a "forklift" picking up dietary fats and delivering them where the body needs energy and as the "cellular equivalent of money" used by the body for whatever it wants to create wherever funds are needed.[1]  How cool is that?  Sounds like a much better bet as an energy boyfriend than say coffee.  While coffee can be hotheaded too strong or too weak often in need of sweetener and eventually turning cold and bitter carnitine is hard-working has a steady job and a bit of money to spend on you.  He always knows where you need support most without you saying a word.  Ahhh now that's more like it.

You're probably not surprised to hear that most people aren't getting optimal levels of carnitine are you?  With the diminished quality of conventionally farmed meat lowered consumption of red meat in general and people opting for more vegan or vegetarian meals and lifestyles a typical person might take in around 50 mg of carnitine a day even though the optimal level is closer to the 250-500 mg level and therapeutic levels are even higher.  We love to introduce RiboCarniClear and Carnitine Synergy to clients looking to benefit from a little one-to-one time with carnitine.  Just who might benefit from getting to know carnitine?    Naming just a few

  • People who want to kick a caffeine/stimulant habit and maintain steady natural energy levels
  • Vegans and vegetarians or others who aren't consuming optimal levels of carnitine from food sources
  • People who need to improve fat oxidation including those with excess body fat or high triglyceride levels
  • Athletes in training who want improved performance and energy
  • People with conditions that would benefit from additional support for their heart or immune system

What else can people do to improve their energy naturally?  In addition to carnitine consider inviting B vitamins magnesium vitamins C and E and antioxidants to the party.   These natural energy sources turn on the body's energy pathways and optimize the mitochondria's ability to turn food into energy.  (If you hadn't noticed those mitochondria are party people they want to be up all day and night but they need energy to do it!)   By turning to natural sources of energy clients will enjoy the added benefits of slowing the aging process extinguishing free radicals and maximizing cell health.  And with all that going on maybe they can finally kick that bad boyfriend to the curb!
